“Enhanced Economic Slavery”

Comment - Immigration reform, or as it should be called, ‘enhanced economic slavery’,  is once again rearing it’s ugly head. The advocates of this concept seemingly choose to ignore the ramifications inherent in this idea. We have seen a rise in the number of illegals entering the country, (mainly as a result of the first immigration reform program during the Reagan administration), and  have seen jobs once held by Americans, quietly disappear. Immigration reform advocates seem unable to accept the idea that these people, however wretched their previous existence, have in fact taken jobs once held by American citizens, especially in the construction trades and hospitality industries. This of course does not take into account educational and medical costs incurred by a large population of people who do not pay enough taxes to support the entitlement structure of this country, (this based on a cost benefit analysis done by the IRS in 1990,  who  reported that for every tax dollar made by illegals two dollars in benefits were being used by them in medical and educational entitlements).

Looking at the whole issue intellectually we can safely assume that when the formerly illegal immigrants are made legal there will be no real gain for the average Americans still working and paying taxes. I believe, we can safely assume the new legals will begin to expect higher wages in keeping with their new status.  However, like the original American work force they have displaced, they can in turn be displaced by the arrival of new illegals. The end result will be a never ending downward spiral of wages causing continued deconomic disparity in the population as a whole,  trend that will only serve the larger corporate interest.
